The Big Riff Project was AFAIK the second attempt of AM4-T at producing a song using the Internet as the ONLY mean of communication. The Musicians don't know each other personally, only by their posts in the NG.
There had been another attempt in late Summer 2001 - (the mixing contest, part I), but somehow it didn't work out as planned.
The whole thing started with Dug posting a mp3-file of him playing a guitar riff on 02/19/02. Then, based on this riff, people started to submit vocal tracks, bass and drums in mp3 format.

All tracks were made available on Dug's webspace, so that all others could download them, review them, an record their own new tracks playing along to the downloaded tracks.

I submitted several (that is: two) versions of a drum track. One was a rough track, so that people had a "real" drum sound to play along to, the second was recorded later, when the song was almost finished and was then submitted as 4 individual tracks (kick, snare, oh, lower toms).

If you are interested in the single tracks, or the whole mix, feel free to post to alt.music.4-track.. or send me a mail.

These pictures were taken during the recording session for the second drum track version in April 02 (never mind the stupid faces):
